Yes!!!!! Lucy Calkins never said not to use phonics or explicit instruction. She did say rather than breaking children into groups based on ability that you should teach whole group. Those who first adapted her in the US threw out the phonics and explicit instruction while implementing whole group instruction. I know this because it was my masters program. Thank you Oakland University. If you don't teach children phonics how are they going to sound out words? If you don't teach reading and writing together, what's the point? If you are unable to read, you will be unable to write coherently. Duh? Kudos to Troy for making this bold move.
