At the recent National Sheriff’s Association Conference held in Washington, D.C., Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones shared alarming insights following briefings with the FBI on potential terrorist threats to the United States. According to Sheriff Jones, the warnings were clear: terrorist attacks on American soil are not a matter of 'if' but 'when.'
Watch the Sheriff’s message below:
The FBI outlined several methods through which these attacks could manifest, including cyber-attacks aimed at crippling essential infrastructures like power grids, orchestrated train derailments, and coordinated assaults by armed terrorist cells across various parts of the country. Sheriff Jones highlighted a concerning incident from 2020 when the Butler County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) dispatch center fell victim to a significant cyber-attack, underscoring the reality of these threats.
Sheriff Jones disclosed the staggering frequency of cyber-attack attempts on the BCSO, with daily attempts originating from China and Iran, and a notable past breach by Russian hackers. He expressed concern over the scale of cyber warfare capabilities, particularly from China, which he believes outmatches the U.S. by a significant margin.
The sheriff also relayed information from the FBI regarding individuals crossing the U.S. border with intentions to cause harm, emphasizing an unprecedented level of threat. The discussions at the conference also touched on efforts to undermine national and local elections, aiming to erode public trust in governmental institutions.
In response to these escalating threats, Sheriff Jones is taking proactive measures to fortify his department and the community. Immediate actions include equipping all police cruisers with rifles and enhancing hazmat training and resources. Furthermore, a public training program titled “When Disaster Strikes: Prepare, Act, Survive” is slated for May, aiming to empower residents with knowledge and skills for disaster response.
Amid these preparations, Sheriff Jones is advocating for stringent measures against immigrants convicted of felonies and calling for the establishment of a dedicated cybersecurity department at the state level. He also urges for reinforced protection along the northern U.S. border, citing diminished vigilance due to resource reallocation to the southern border.
Sheriff Jones’s call to action underscores a commitment to safeguarding not just Butler County but also the broader national community against evolving and multifaceted threats.
